As of the 2020 census, the population was 523,824, [1] making it the second-most populous county in Kansas. The county was named for John Sedgwick, the highest ranking Union general killed during the American Civil War.

Sedgwick County, Kansas, organized in 1870, was named after Major General John Sedgwick. Sedgwick fought in many wars and campaigns including the Mexican and Civil Wars. He died fighting in the Civil War in 1864.
