Dec 22, 2007 · Probably the easiest way to get from I-81 to I-95 near Fredericksburg, VA is to get on I-66 near Strasburg, VA, take that 25-30 miles and then get on US-17 (also called Winchester Road). You get on US 17 from I-66 before the DC area traffic really gets to be a factor, and US 17 is a pretty decent road.

Aug 25, 2003 · On holiday weekends, I-81 can save some time as there are few non-peak periods, but I'd recommend taking I-64 off I-81 and then VA 288 around Richmond to pickup I-95 just south of Richmond. This gets you around the worst potential areas of I-95 and gets you back on I-95 earlier for the best parts of the I-95 route.

Aug 28, 2014 · Going from Allentown, PA to Myrtle Beach, SC via I-81 and I-74 (which is a better choice than I-77 which goes further south to Charlotte) is anywhere from 1.5 - 2 hours longer than taking I-95 South. I personally would take I-95 South from Allentown and then go around DC as mentioned above

Mar 8, 2007 · Actually, it's I-66 that leads from I-81 near Front Royal east to DC and the beltway. I-64 goes east from I-81 near Staunton toward Richmond and Norfolk, well south of the DC area. It's been a while since I've been on I-66, but IIRC it's a zoo from Manassas on in to the beltway.

Dec 11, 2004 · As you get past Syracuse, the elevation along 81 gets steeper and, if the weather's poor, you run the risk of snow all the way to Harrisburg (PA). We took this route home from Hershey in March of 03 and had snow on the way down and snow most of the way back.

Mar 31, 2007 · I-66 is fine between I-81 and Route 17, very minimal (if any) road construction. Traffic will be heavy during rush hour but should move steadily at posted speeds. Route 17 from I-66 to I-95 is all 4 lane with some stop lights but they don't slow traffic appreciably.

Oct 25, 2000 · Another thing to take into consideration is tolls. I'm not aware of any tolls on 81, but you'll pay tolls on 95 through New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. As Smile&Nod said, 81 does have more tractor trailers on it, I hate driving on 81 on Sundays. Also, if there's an accident, you'll wait a long time without many places to bail out.
