Nov 26, 2022 · It's based mainly on the consensus of the speakers. Somehow who only knows Hochdeutsch won't be able to understand Bavarian at all. There is a ton of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary differences that under normal circumstances, would make Bavarian and most German "dialects" separate languages from Standard german/Hochdeutsch.

Jul 14, 2023 · Dialects like Bavarian are not separate languages. I wouldn't be worried that they wouldn't understand Standard German. But it is possible that YOU won't understand someone talking Standard German with Bavarian flavour. Or that your Standard German isn't quite so understandable as you might think, if you were only using Duolingo.

Dec 24, 2022 · In general Austrian German differs from "Germany German" most of all in case of some vocabulary, and a tad bit in case of pronunciation and grammar. The textbook goes from A1 to B1, so covers all the basics and the intermediate level (from B2 up it's most of all just learning vocabulary and there's also some new grammar, but not that much).

May 22, 2024 · I am not even Bavarian, but I find this "Bavarian exceptionalism" both from Bavarians and Northerners really annoying. Bavarian traditions and traditional clothing aren't so different from the rest of Germany. It's just that Bavarians have gone to much more effort to keep their traditions alive, which means they stick out.

Dec 29, 2020 · It's a pretty old sentiment, dating pack at least to Prussian times, that has been kept alive as part of their cultural identity. Bavarian politicians also love to keep this sentiment around, since it's cheap and effective vote-bating. It's easy to overlook though that this isn't a Bavarian thing per se. The Saxons are very similar in that regard.

I know that plenty of people will speak English, but I'd like to know some basic greetings and phrases that will be appropriate. Any help with pronunciation would be helpful as well.
