After nearly two years of Miami Dade County considering locations for its new billion-dollar incinerator, the county is going back to the drawing board.

MIAMI - The Miami-Dade commission will discuss the future of solid waste management during a meeting on Tuesday. It comes after Mayor Daniella Levine Cava issued a memo recommending that plans to build a new incinerator in the county be scrapped in favor of continuing long-hauling waste.

Two months after her plan to build a new garbage incinerator came under attack by President Donald Trump’s son, Miami-Dade’s mayor is dropping her longtime fight for a new trash-burning facility and instead wants the county to explore building a new landfill somewhere else in Florida.

Miami-Dade County has abandoned plans for a $1.5 billion waste-to-energy incinerator following public backlash. The project, proposed after a fire destroyed the county’s aging incinerator, aimed to generate electricity while reducing pollution. However, environmentalists and residents opposed it, citing past pollution and foul odors.

Broward residents, along with the mayors of Miramar and Doral, showed up at county hall to ensure their voices were heard.
