United Nations agencies called for an end to the violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as fighting between

M23 now controls nearly all of North Kivu and the province’s vast mineral wealth—including tin (cassiterite), tantalum (coltan), tungsten (wolframite), and gold, which are critical for global electronics and industrial production.

Between 700,000 and 1 million people are living in refugee camps around the capital of North Kivu. Their critical situation has become uncertain since the city was taken by rebels and Rwandan soldiers.

President of the Democratic Republic of Congo said on Thursday that his troopers are fighting an insurgence by the Rwandan-backed militant group M23 which recently captured swaths of land in the east.

The eastern DRC city of Goma was seized by M23 rebels and their Rwandan allies on 26 January. Residents have emerged to count the dead and make sense of the fast-moving offensive.

At least 111 bodies were found in Goma, DRC after clashes between the army and the armed group M23 Movement, a local leader told EFE.
