Defense, defense, and more defense. That was the thinking of general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles in this year’s NFL draft.

The Eagles started the draft with a likely edge rusher and ended it with one. The 6-3, 258-pound Powell-Ryland had just four sacks in three years at Florida before breaking out in his final two seasons at Virginia Tech with 25 1/2 sacks in 25 games.

Philadelphia has a good track record of developing UDFAs into key contributors, including running back Corey Clement in 2017 and linebacker T.J. Edwards in 2019. Most recently, Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks made the team in 2023 as an undrafted free agent.
