On Sunday, March 9, 2025, a large group gathered in Selma, Alabama, to mark the 60th anniversary of a clash that became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

Events in Selma, Ala. six decades ago helped win support for the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Today local activists say they're still fighting stubborn segregation, poverty and gun violence.

On March 7, 1965, a march by over 500 civil rights demonstrators was violently broken up at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama; state troopers and a sheriff’s posse fired tear gas and beat marchers with batons in what became known as “Bloody Sunday.”
