Marshall football is going through a difficult offseason as the program has been hit with a massive fine from the Sun Belt Conference. The Thundering Herd are rebuilding from the loss of head coach Charles Huff to Southern Miss after a stellar 2024 season.

Despite its offensive and ball-handling woes in the second half, South Alabama’s Sun Belt-best defense didn’t take the day off. The Jaguars limited the Trojans to 35.1% shooting overall and 29% (9-for-31) from 3-point range and held them well below their season average of 74.1 points per game.

The Sun Belt Conference issued a $100,000 fine to Marshall University on Friday for opting out of its Independence Bowl matchup with Army at the conclusion of the 2024 football season. After having previously accepted the bid for the bowl on Dec.

The Sun Belt conference fined Marshall for withdrawing from their bowl game against Army in December, and the school still stands by its decision to opt out.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Sun Belt fined Marshall $100,000 on Friday for opting out of the Independence Bowl last month. Marshall withdrew from the Dec. 28 game in Shreveport, Louisiana, after a coaching change resulted in much of its roster jumping into the transfer portal.

Marshall backed out of the game because so many players entered the transfer portal after coach Charles Huff's departure.
