WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are working overtime after a lengthy White House meeting to meet President Donald Trump’s demand for a big budget package that includes some $3 trillion in tax breaks, massive program cuts and a possible extension of the nation’s debt limit.

As the House struggles to begin work on "one big, beautiful bill" to advance President Donald Trump's agenda, Senate Republicans are starting a two-bill path.

Trump set the tone at the start of the nearly five-hour session, lawmakers said, then left them alone for a meeting that ran so long that Speaker Mike Johnson missed his own one-on-one at the U.S. Capitol with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,

President Donald Trump said Friday he wants to slash the U.S. trade deficit with Japan as he welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to the White House for their first face-to-face meeting. Trump added that he isn't taking the possibility of levying tariffs against Japan off the table,

"We love Japan!" Trump said as he greeted Ishiba and the two shook hands. Trump later told reporters at they sat together in the Oval Office that the two countries would work together to get U.S. trade deficit with Japan down to "even.
