As HBO puts together its cast for its high-profile series adaptation of the "Harry Potter" fantasy books, they have made a rather controversial casting decision regarding one of the main characters. According to a report from Deadline,

The cast for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV show is rounding out into shape. Shortly after John Lithgow signed on to play Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, the network has found actors to portray two of the school’s most notable professors.

The Harry Potter HBO series is in negotiations with Janet McTeer to play Minerva McGonagall and Paap Essiedu is near a deal to play Severus Snape.

The Harry Potter series will debut on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027. While Paapa Essiedu in talks to play Professor Severus Snape, John Lithgow will be seen as Professor Albus Dumbledore.

John Lithgow has played everything from Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha to an extraterrestrial patriarch in 3rd Rock from the Sun. Next he will be the powerful, wise, and compassionate professor Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter TV show. He confirmed the casting in a recent interview, saying it will “define me for the last chapter of my life.”
