The U.S. Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday voted to send the nomination of billionaire hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as President Donald Trump's Treasury secretary on to the full Senate for approval.

The hedge fund manager and Trump advisor also lent support to the idea of reconsidering deposit insurance limits for some kinds of accounts, such as those used for payrolls.

The Senate Finance Committee voted 16-11 to advance Bessent’s nomination, clearing the way for a Senate floor vote in the coming days. Two Democrats — Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire — joined the committee’s Republicans in supporting Bessent for the top economic job in Trump’s Cabinet.
