The Republican leader of the Illinois House and five Illinois voters have filed a lawsuit asking the state Supreme Court to throw out the legislative district map drawn in 2021.

The top Republican in the Illinois House of Representatives sued to invalidate the chamber’s Democratic-approved district map, saying it was a product of “extreme partisan gerrymandering.”

Republicans in the Illinois House say the state’s current legislative map is unconstitutional and illegally favors Democrats, and the GOP is asking the state’s Supreme Court to intervene.

The lawsuit comes after House Republicans failed to gain seats in the two election cycles since a new map was drawn in 2021 following the census and implemented for the 2022 election. Republicans lost five seats in 2022 and failed to win any back in 2024, leaving House Democrats with 78 members in the 118-member House.
