Poultry facilities in Dauphin, Cumberland and Lancaster counties have detected avian influenza, the USDA and state Department of Agriculture said Thursday.

According to the CDC, bird flu has caused recent human cases in dairy and poultry workers in the United States, though the risk to the public remains low.

Legislation intended to aid the state’s response to highly-pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, passed the Senate Wednesday. It was the first bill this session to pass through both chambers of the legislature.

At least one bird from a commercial poultry operation in Lancaster County has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the state officials.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on Monday confirmed the first case of avian flu in domestic poultry in 2025. The positive case was found in a chicken flock on a commercial farm in Lehigh County. This is the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in commercial poultry in Pennsylvania since February 2024.
