Pope Francis had recovered enough Tuesday from two acute respiratory crises to no longer require noninvasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican said, and was receiving just high flows of supplemental oxygen.

Pope Francis experienced “two episodes of acute respiratory failure,” the Vatican said Monday. The episodes were caused by “significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus” and a consequent narrowing of the airways, the Vatican said. Earlier Monday, the 88-year-old pontiff underwent two bronchoscopies and doctors removed a buildup of secretions.
